Grapeseed oil is made by cold-pressing the seeds of grapes. It has been extensively used around the world. If you buy grapeseed oil that is free of solvents and preservatives (such as TBHQ and BHT) the cold-pressed organic oil will retain most of the natural beneficial ingredients compared to the chemically pressed oils.
Grapeseed oil has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-microbial activity. It contains high quantities of Vitamin E and minerals like zinc potassium, copper, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and selenium. But most of all grapeseed oil is rich in proanthocyanidins (OPC), a compound that is higher in antioxidants than both Vitamin E and Vitamin C.
Grapeseed oil is appreciated by many chefs for retaining the original flavor of foods and for its versatility. It is an excellent ingredient in salad dressings and marinades. It is also able to handle high-temperatures without smoking, burning or splattering. Since it has a smoke point higher than other oils, such as olive, corn or sesame, grapeseed oil can be safely used for deep-frying and baking.
Keep grapeseed oil on hand and use it to add variety to your diet. Using only one kind of oil (ie. olive or canola) limits the minerals and nutrients you ingest. Live a little – try grapeseed oil!
